KINGSTON, Jamaica – Quickgallop.com recently spoke with trainer Rohan Crichton about his horse, Rough Entry, who will compete in the Mouttet Mile on December 2, 2023, at Caymanas Park.

Rough Entry has had a successful career in the United States, starting in 34 races and earning eight victories, six second-place finishes, and three third-place finishes. His career earnings total US$254,526.

In 2023, Rough Entry competed in seven races, securing two wins and four second-place finishes but no third-place finishes.

Rough Entry's last race occurred on September 23, 2023 – a six-furlong Optional Claiming event – which he won with a time of 1:10.60.

QUICK GALLOP (QG) – How has Rough Entry adapted since arriving in Jamaica?

ROHAN CRICHTON (RC) – Following quarantine at Plumb Point and the necessary protocols, Rough Entry moved to Caymanas Park where he is preparing for the Mouttet Mile. He has acclimatized well and put in a good effort during a recent workout. I anticipate a strong performance in the Mouttet Mile.

QG: How would you rate Rough Entry's chances of winning the Mouttet Mile?

RC: I'd say they're fair to fine. He's won eight times at various distances and adjusted to the new environment; with luck on our side, he'll provide a solid performance. He will face stiff competition, as some good horses will be in the line-up.

QG: Who will ride Rough Entry during the Mouttet Mile?

RC: As of now, no decision has been made regarding his rider.

QG: Were you initially planning to enter two horses in the Mouttet Mile?

RC: Yes. I had intended to enter both Rough Entry and Spirit of Light. When I inquired about bringing both horses for the race, I was told that only one could be accommodated due to limited quarantine space. Based on that, I chose Rough Entry. Spirit of Light is now in the stable but, unfortunately, won't be qualified in time for the Mouttet.

QG: How many horses do you currently have in Jamaica?

RC: At the moment, I have four horses in Jamaica – Rough Entry, Spirit of Light, Oasis Jack, and Provocativa.

QG: With four horses in Jamaica, will you continue to train here after the Mouttet Mile?

RC: (smiling) Yes, I plan to train here in Jamaica in the future, but on a limited basis. It's a wait-and-see situation.

QG: Considering your main track is Gulfstream, how has 2023 been for you so far?

RC: This year has not been my best. I've trained 43 winners out of approximately 270 starts. In comparison, last year (2022) saw me visit the winner's enclosure 68 times.
