JamalJames by disqualification route

Four-year-old chestnut gelding JamalJames, trained by Errol Waugh and ridden by Daniel Satchell, was awarded the winner’s position in the $1.1 million Rum Fire Trophy following the disqualification of winner Adoring Lady, ridden by Christopher Mamdeen.

Adoring Lady scampered home by three parts-of-a-length over JamalJames and Necromancer (Raddesh Roman) in the Optional Claiming ($450,000-$400,000) event over the 5 straight (1,000m) course.

Following the inquiry, the colours of Adoring Lady were lowered and the race was awarded to JamalJames with Necromancer promoting to second and Smokey Topaz (Omar Walker) third. Adoring Lady was demoted to fourth.

The announcement from the stewards was that Adoring Lady was disqualified for causing interference and intimidation to Smokey Topaz. The final time for the event was 59.2.

Lovely Day comes home

After releasing the maiden tag on October 16, 2017, beating the 2018 Jamaica Leger winner Marquesas by 2 lengths going 6 ½ furlongs (1,300m), the Wayne DaCosta-trained bay filly Lovely Day (Adore The Gold – Luscious) was out of action for two years.

On her return to competitive racing on October 9, 2019, the now four-year-old finished 11th behind Harry’s Train in a 5 furlong (1000m) round event. Lovely Day then showed sign of returning to form when she placed second behind Blusie in a 5 ½ furlong (1,100m) event on October 19. She was later disqualified from that race.

With those two runs under her girth, Lovely Day was expected to get things right on this occasion in the $1.1 million Power 106FM Trophy going over the straight course. The fleet-footed Lovely Day didn’t disappoint as she romped home easily by 3 lengths in a good time of 1:01.0. Lovely Day raced with the tongue tie on along with Lasix and the cheek pieces.

Lazer Light (Roger Hewitt), Cali Dreamer (Jemar Jackson) and April Spirit (Romario Spencer) followed the winner home in that order.

Thepowersthatbe releases maiden tag

Bred, owned and trained by Carl Anderson, Thepowersthatbe (Silent Valor – Catalogue), after 14 starts comprising four-second place finishes and two, third-place finishes, finally got his head in front when he easily won the $1.3 million Jamaica Racing Commission Trophy.

Leading rider Christopher Mamdeen was able to get Thepowersthatbe was up and running when the starting gates opened, racing in second place behind Ashley’s Glory (Osive Donegal). Thepowersthatbe then took over at the half-mile (800m) and from there on never looked threatened, cruising home to score by 7 lengths over Butseeyah (Hakeem Pottinger) and Sweet Surprise (Omar Walker). The winning time was 1:34.0 with splits 24.1 x 48.0 x 1:12.3.

Easy does it for down-in-class Luana

After a dismal effort on a $550,000-$500,000 claiming tag on last, when finishing in ninth place by 9 ½ lengths behind the winner, Luana stepped down two classes to contest the $1.1 million Tru Juice Trophy – an Optional Claiming ($250,000-$200,000) event over 6 ½ furlongs (1,300m). Ridden by champion jockey Anthony Thomas, Luana (Casual Trick – Diamondinthefuff), although taking time to get going, defeated rivals by 2 ¼ lengths in a smooth 1:21.3.
