KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Quick Galloper takes a swift look at the final result of the 2023 St Leger contested over ten furlongs on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at Caymanas Park.
The 2023 Jamaica St Leger was won by the filly Thalita, ridden by Reyan Lewis, trained by Jason DaCosta, bred by Wilbert Bagwandeen, and owned by Carlton Watson. Garth Pennant is the groom of Thalita.
This swift look is done in no particular order.
1 – Given that neither the winner of the 2000 (Mojito) nor the 1000 Guineas (Mamma Mia) were successful in the St Leger, there will be no Triple Crown winner this year.
2 – Before Thalita won the 2023 St Leger, the last time a filly won this Classic event was in 2017, She’s A Maneater. Of note, Thalita lives in the same shedrow as She’s A Maneater. Before She’s A Maneater in 2017, the next filly in the St Leger order was Alsafra in 2008.
3 – There were four fillies of the 12 entered in the 2023 St Leger. They were Thalita - the winner, Princess Sharon - third, Mamma Mia - fifth, and All For Love - twelfth.
4 - Thalita is the second progeny of stallion Soul Warrior to win the St Leger. The first was Supreme Soul (Soul Warrior – Beware Baby).
5 – More on the stallion Soul Warrior. Four of the first five horses to finish in the St Leger were sired by Soul Warrior, in fact the first three are offspring of Soul Warrior. First Thalita (Soul Warrior – Luminous Trieste) second Money Miser (Soul Warrior – She’s Traditional), third Princess Sharon (Soul Warrior – Princess Shine), and fifth Mamma Mia (Soul Warrior – Princess Geeta).
6 – Trainer Jason DaCosta had three runners in the 2023 St Leger. They finished as follows; Thalita (first), Mamma Mia (fifth), and Life Is Life (sixth). This means that all of DaCosta’s horses earned in the St Leger.
7 – Both jockey Reyan Lewis, and trainer Jason DaCosta were winning their first St Leger and their third Classic race. Lewis had previous Classic success with She’s A Wonder in the 1000 Guineas, and also in the Jamaica Oaks. DaCosta’s previous Classic wins were Miniature Man in the 2000 Guineas, and Mamma Mia in the 1000 Guineas.

The results of the race show how smart Jason is. Mojito was handcuffed from the start while one horse controlled the lead. Watch the race.
