Prodigious Power Given The Edge Against American Aviator

The second race on Saturday's card features locally bred and foreign three and four-year-olds competing over 7½ furlongs.

Local horses must be non-winners of four races, while foreign entries are restricted to non-winners of three.

Five runners will contest the event, with three imported from the USA.

1 – AMERICAN AVIATOR (USA)

Four-year-old brown colt by American Freedom out of Mark Miss. Trained by Jason DaCosta, ridden by Tevin Foster. Record: three wins from 11 starts.

Won his last outing 28 days ago by 6¼ lengths at seven furlongs, demonstrating the kind of form that makes him a serious contender here. This colt has taken time to find his stride, but his recent performance suggests he has turned the corner. Runs from the front and maintains his gallop through the final furlong, a racing style that puts pressure on his rivals from the outset. The four-week gap since his last start should have him fresh and ready. Will set the pace from the gate and force rivals to catch him if they can.

2 – PRINCE ROY

Four-year-old bay colt by Here Comes Ben out of Princess Shine. Trained by Jason DaCosta, ridden by Shaheem Gordon.

Won his second career race last Saturday and returns quickly on the seven-day turnaround. That victory came against inferior opposition, and the step up in class here represents a significant challenge. Faces significantly stronger opposition and lacks the class to compete at this level. The quick return gives him little time to recover, and the quality of this field exposes his limitations. A winning outcome appears remote.

3 – PRODIGIOUS POWER (USA)

Three-year-old bay colt by Global Campaign out of Ghostie. Trained by Anthony Nunes, ridden by Ian Spence.

Record: two wins from three starts, his only loss coming to stablemate Phenomental Power, a horse held in high regard by the stable. That defeat is no disgrace given the quality of the victor. Demonstrated tactical versatility when rallying from behind to defeat Sir Don in his second start, showing he does not need to lead to win. This adaptability makes him dangerous in any scenario. His age suggests continued improvement, and three-year-olds at this stage of development often progress rapidly between races. The May foal has room to mature physically and mentally. Seeks third consecutive victory and represents the Anthony Nunes stable, which has a strong record with young horses.

4 – THOUSAND TREASURES (USA)

Four-year-old bay colt by Thousand Words out of Tabitha. Trained by Gary Subratie, ridden by Emelio McLean.

Won in claiming ranks seven days ago. However, claiming company represents a significant drop-in class from today's assignment. The seven-day turnaround is tight, leaving little time for recovery or preparation. Requires significant progression to factor in this company, and the jump from claiming to this level is substantial. Would need career-best performance to threaten the top two or three finishers.

5 – SENSATIONAL SOUL

Chestnut horse by Soul Warrior out of Red Gold. Trained by Gary Subratie, ridden by Dane Dawkins.

Finished strongly when last competing at the Overnight Allowance level over six furlongs, indicating his fitness is returning. Shows signs of returning to previous form after a period of inconsistency, and the timing of this return suggests connections believe he is ready to compete. Will benefit from the distance increase to 7½ furlongs, as his running style suggests he needs ground to show his best. The extra two and a half furlongs should allow him to use his stamina and late pace. Merits consideration as a live outsider and could surprise if the pace sets up favourably for closers.

THE QUICK GALLOPER'S VERDICT

This race sets up as a clash between the front-running American Aviator and the progressive three-year-old Prodigious Power. American Aviator will attempt to control the race from the front, using his tactical speed to dictate terms and put pressure on his rivals. However, the question remains whether he can hold off a younger, improving rival in the stretch.

Prodigious Power represents the main danger. The three-year-old is lightly raced with only three career starts, and horses at this stage often make rapid improvement.

Sensational Soul cannot be dismissed entirely. Sensational Soul could be picking up the pieces late. He represents value for those seeking an upset.

Prince Roy and Thousand Treasures lack the credentials to win. Both are stepping up significantly in class and appear outmatched by the top three.

The selection: PRODIGIOUS POWER to win, with AMERICAN AVIATOR the main danger and SENSATIONAL SOUL for the exotics.
