KINGSTON, Jamaica - After a disappointing seventh place finish in the one-mile Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes last December, Power Ranking opened his three-year-old campaign with an encouraging effort on the Ash Wednesday card of March 2, 2022.

Bred by Casual Trick out of Escandalosa), Power Ranking easily brushed aside rivals by 5 ½ lengths in a three-year-old and upwards (non-winners of two) event over the straight (1000m) course.

With Dane Nelson in the saddle, Power Ranking got a good break at the off and was tugging for the lead but Nelson decided to take his mount off the pace and allowed Unruly Gyal (Anthony Thomas) and Phoenix Risen (Romario Spencer) to battle on the front end.

Coming across the dummy rails, Nelson got Power Ranking going and the bay colt, with powerful strides, sprinted clear of rivals to win without any fuss. Phoenix Risen was second and Unruly Gyal third.

“He [Power Ranking] is still green and he is improving although this is a five-straight race. Maybe he will turn out to be a good sprinter, so let’s see what happens down the line.

“When the horses are fit you prepare them; when they are sound you prepare them and so he was ready to run and we entered him and he won.

“Power Ranking carried 2.5 kgs overweight and he still won and that’s good. Let’s see what type of races come up for him,” Azan said.

Speaking about the upcoming Classic races, Azan added: “I don’t know. He doesn’t look like a horse that can stay, so right now I don’t know about the Classics.”
