Power From Above, a four-year-old chestnut filly, came from way off the pace to easily beat rivals in the Valbert Marlowe Memorial Cup on Saturday, June 8, 2024.

Despite starting racing in last place in a field of six horses, Power From Above surged ahead of runners at the furlong pole to claim a convincing victory by 2 ¼ lengths, completing the nine-furlong trophy event in a time of 1:53.4 (24.0 x 47.1 x 1:12.4 x 1:40.3).

The race was a native-bred four-year-olds and upward who had not won four races and imported four-year-olds and upward who had not won three races.

This impressive performance cemented her affinity for long-distance races.

Trainer Anthony Nunes said that he was pleased with the effort of his charge and believes that Power From Above will continue to improve and be competitive in the classes above.

“Power from Above is an out-and-out stayer, and there’s no doubt about that. She is pace-dependent; if the front end runs strong, she will run on nicely like she did today (June 8). If there’s no pace in the race, she will find it difficult.

“She enjoys races over a mile. She is now in Overnight Allowance, and once we get the races, I think she will hold her own up there as well. She ran the Jamaica Oaks as an immature filly, and so I think she has matured nicely at age four,” Nunes said in his post-race interview.

He added: “You know what is nice about this? I am very friendly with Mikey Marlowe, and we are pretty close that way, and it's nice to win his dad’s trophy. I have been training horses for 30 years, and since I was a child, the nine-furlong chute has been called the Marlowe chute. It is not a classic race, but it is an achievement to win this race for Mikey and his family.”

Power From Above, guided by Raddesh Roman, pursued the leaders from the rear of the pack and watched as Antarctica (Jerome Innis) led the field down the backstretch ahead of California Gold (Reyan Lewis), Awesome Anthony (Shane Richardson), and Cookie Day N Night (Tevin Foster).
