KINGSTON, Jamaica - PELICULA, trained by Richard Azan, strengthened her claim for the upcoming fillies’ only Jamaica Oak Classic after an impressive run in the $1.02-million Terremoto Trophy feature race at Caymanas Park on Sunday, July 17, 2022.
Pelicula was never considered to be part of this year’s Classic mix but after defeating rivals in the three-year-old and upwards (non-winners of two) at 10 furlongs (2,000m) by two lengths in a time of 2:13.2, she has staked strong claims for the Oaks.
The three-year-old bay filly bred by Soul Warrior out of the Vanadium mare Milestone will now enter the 10-furlong Jamaica Oaks as one of the main contenders to take the top prize on August 7, one day after the Jamaica Derby.
It was not the best of starts for Pelicula as she raced among the bookmarkers going into the clubhouse turn as Roraima (Tevin Foster) showed the way ahead of D Head Cornerstone (Andre’ Martin) and Salute The Deputy (Dick Cardenas).  It was the same order entering the main track and nothing much changed down the backstretch except for stablemate Rainsville (Bebeto Harvey) and Pelicula coming into view.
Approaching the half-mile pole Pelicula, made significant ground, going in chase of Rainsville who surged past runners and looked to have stolen a march on the field when opening some leghths.
But turning for home, Pelicula went by Rainsville and never gave up her gallop as she got home quite easily ahead of Lion of Ekati (Roger Hewitt) and Rainsville.
