KINGSTON, Jamaica - Outbidder came to the races with high expectations, especially being a half-sister to both Above and Beyond, a double Classic winner, and Further and Beyond, a former Horse of the Year.
However, Outbidder, the Savoy Stomp – Rumble progeny has not lived up to those expectations. In 17 races, the Jason DaCosta trainee has won five times, finished second once, and third twice. Her most recent victory, on Saturday, August 12, 2023, may have signalled her actual potential and the beginning of what can be achieved in the rest of her career.
Ridden by Reyan Lewis, Outbidder led from the first jump to win the second staging of the $1.25-million Liu Chie Poo Trophy, an Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upwards at a mile (1,600m).
Outbidder won by three-quarters of a length ahead of her stablemate Sunset Silhoutte (Jerome Innis) in a respectable time of 1:41.2 (24.4 x 48.1 x 1:14.2).
DaCosta stated that Outbidder had been hammering on the door for some time and that he was pleased that she could supply the goods while also demonstrating her worth.
“Outbidder finished second the last time after a rough trip, so I was expecting her to do well today,” DaCosta added.
“All of her siblings run long races and are all quality horses. She [Outbidder] has been plagued with issues from day on, which is why we haven’t seen her true potential. You know, if we can unlock it, we’ll get some good races out of her,” added the trainer.
Outbidder broke off well at the start of the race and stormed to the front and kept the lead passing the intersection at the seven-furlong (1,400m). Big Big Daddy (Richard Henry), Tekapunt (Phillip Parchment), and Sunset Silhoutte trailed the bay filly.
Outbidder held her lead well down the backstretch until the half-mile (800m) turn, when she increased the tempo on competitors. Outbidder led the field into the lane with a good lead and was looking all over an easy winner.
Sunset Silhoutte presented her challenge near the conclusion of the stages of the race, but Outbidder responded effectively and proved to be the stronger of the two in the end. Dane Dawkins’ Get A Pepsi finished third in the race.
Lewis expressed his appreciation for Outbidder’s efforts, saying she will continue to improve.
“I know this horse [Outbidder] well and so it wasn’t difficult ride. I mean, the last time Outbidder ran, she got interfered with and lost by a neck and so this time I decided to put her in front, regulate the pace and ask her when I am comfortable.
“Once going in front and no one molesting you, it will be much easier for the horse and that was exactly what happened. He [Jason DaCosta] prepares his horse very well and so I am confident riding them.
“Outbidder is a very good horse,” Lewis said.
