KINGSTON, Jamaica – Gary Subratie, trainer of the exceptional foreign filly Desert of Malibu, has announced that his horse will not be participating in the upcoming Mouttet Mile. He also proposed changes to the rules for the 2024 edition.

"Unfortunately, Desert of Malibu did not meet the conditions for the 2023 Mouttet Mile. I believe this is a detriment to the race's competitiveness, but it is what it is at this time.

“I think there should be a re-evaluation and amendment of the Mouttet Mile rules. I suggest retaining four spots for visiting foreign horses.

“This would leave 12 positions to be filled, with nine going to the top earners from Overnight up and the remaining three allocated to winners of the St Elizabeth Distaff, Port Royal Sprint, and Jamaica Cup.

“In my opinion, this would better ensure that the best horses compete in our country's richest and most prestigious race," Subratie shared with this website.

The trainer confirmed that his filly will participate on Mouttet Mile race day in a new sprint event called the Bruceontheloose.

"Desert of Malibu will take part in the 6½ furlong Bruceontheloose Sprint on Mouttet Mile race day. She is currently in excellent condition, having recently galloped three furlongs. Desert of Malibu will be ready for this event," said Subratie.

The impressively built chestnut filly remains undefeated in four local starts to date. In achieving these wins, she posted remarkable times without being off the bridle for any significant duration.

Desert of Malibu is now rated only 2.0 kilogrammes below top handicap sprinter Mahogany and 1.0 kilo above Runaway Algo (USA).

  1. Again it's not rocket science all the racing authority have to do to make this particular race fair for all and Sunday is to tell the racing secretary as from august make sure you have a mile race for the top class horses to race in until the first week in November the 12 fastest horse over the mile distance automatically qualify for the race imagine what is happening now a horse like Rani bangalie ran 1 38 3 for a mile and can't get in this race so too is desert of Malibu 1 38 2 for a mile and can't get in yet still punters will sit there and pay to see horses who can't go that fast over that distance for that huge amount of money people want to see the best horses over the distance not the best money earners it's very very simple to me
