KINGSTON, Jamaica – The oddsmakers at Quickgallop.com had little work to do in putting together the early odds for the second jewel in the local Triple Crown series of races, the Jamaica St Leger. The 10-furlong, Jamaica St Leger is scheduled for July 1.
It was easy for the odds makers to allocate opening St Leger odds of 1-5 on Mojito after his jaw-dropping 12 ½ length triumph in the one-mile Jamaica 2000 Guineas. Mojito is also seen by the oddsmakers as a cinch for the Triple Crown, all things being equal.
Next to Mojito in the St Leger Odds is Thalita, even after the filly was beaten by stablemate Mamma Mia in the 1000 Guineas. The odds makers are of the view that Thalita was perfectly drawn on the outside in the one mile – 1000 Guineas, but moved too quickly to attack Mamma Mia on the headlines with three furlongs left in the contest.
The Quickgallop.com odds makers say that Thalita will be better suited going two furlongs longer, hence her starting odds of 10-1.
The oddsmakers have made a surprising entry in the top five for the St Leger, Huntsman, who did not race in the 2000 Guineas, based solely on possible potential, and the performance of the rest of the three-year-old crop, colts, geldings, and fillies included.
The top five horses on the odds makers’ St Leger list are published below.
