Calculus, Further and Beyond the leaders for the title
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Following the request by THE QUICK GALLOPER, readers have been responding by sharing their thoughts on the 2021 Horse of the Year.
The official Horse of the Year announcement will be made tomorrow morning (February 9) at a press conference to be held at Caymanas Park.
Some of the responses are listed below.
BOOGIE
Further and Beyond is my choice, given his performances returning from injury most noticeable in the Jamaica Cup when his style of running changed and he came from way of the pace and literally flew over the last furlong. Further and Beyond is a horse with lots of ability and a big heart.
BASSIE IN REPLY TO BOOGIE
No way, Calculus should be Horse of the Year after winning the St Leger, the Derby, and Gold Cup especially how Gary Subratie changed him into a monster. He (Calculus) also carried a lot of weight for Further and Beyond in both races that he won.
THE JUGGLER
Having looked at the results of the races which Calculus and Further and Beyond, my choice is Calculus. My view is that the Derby and St Leger say it all.
ONE SON
Only one horse can be crowned as the Horse of the Year, and that is Calculus. Further and Beyond did well but not enough.
TRACKER
Further and Beyond is better than Calculus as the two big races at the end of the season demonstrated. So, the Horse of the Year must be Further and Beyond.
THE THOROUGHBRED
Should be a straight fight between Calculus, the Derby and St Leger winner, and Further and Beyond. Based on my calculations Further and Beyond the winner of the Jamaica Cup and the Ian Levy Cup, the two major Graded races, is the top-rated horse at this time, and, as such, has to be voted as the Horse of the Year.
JOLLY
Tough decision to vote on as both Further and Beyond, and Calculus have strong arguments to consider but if I could vote my ballot would have a tick next to the name of Calculus.
ON THE BACKSTRETCH
Let’s start with the Grade 1 races, Calculus beat Further and Beyond in the St Leger, the Derby, and the Gold Cup. Then Further and Beyond beat Calculus in the Jamaica Cup and the Ian Levy Cup. It is therefore a difficult choice to make between these two horses. My choice is Further and Beyond.

Calculus should be horse of the year if winning the derby and St leger matter it's a no brainer no other grade one horse has impressed further and beyond is first runner up
