KINGSTON, Jamaica - Miss Coupersland, a four-year-old grey filly, celebrated her first career victory dramatically, overcoming apparent defeat to clinch a win. This maiden race for native-bred horses aged four and older took place over a straight distance of 5 furlongs (1,000m) on Saturday, February 1, 2025.
From the start, Miss Coupersland contended for the lead alongside Lord Espo (Roger Hewitt), Ruby's Light (Rotajmar Weir), and Gelroy (Richard Henry). The quartet fought fiercely for dominance as they rounded the track.
As they neared the dummy rails, Gelroy seized the lead, with Miss Coupersland positioned in second. It looked like Gelroy would secure the victory, but jockey Shakes had other ideas.
In the final furlong, Shakes skillfully guided Miss Coupersland to the outside of Gelroy. The filly responded with impressive speed, inching closer as they raced toward the finish line. Ruby’s Light ultimately crossed in third place.
Under the training of Phillip Lee, Miss Coupersland completed the race in a time of 1:03.2 (24.4 x 49.0).
