Double on the day for “The Canter Man”

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jockey Shane Ellis gave a masterclass in the pigskin when he thoroughly outdid and outwitted Robert Halledeen to earn victory on Calculus in the Caymanas Saturday seventh.

Ellis’ second triumph on the day was achieved in the feature Alex Hamilton Memorial Trophy, which was an Open Allowance event (three-year-olds and upwards) going a mile.

As to be expected it was Calculus’ stablemate Awesome Treasure (Dane Dawkins) who assumed the lead followed closely by Calculus and Oneofakind (Robert Halledeen). Rounding the bend Ellis covered every move by Halledeen and Oneofakind by keeping the latter on the rails while Awesome Treasure continued to lead.

Just before turning for home, the wily Ellis started to push Calculus forward to be alongside Awesome Treasure. Closing every gap first on the inside and then on the outside when Calculus took over, Ellis despite the constant challenge of Halledeen on Oneofakind, got his mount home by half-a-length in a final time of 1:38.3. Third went to old campaigner Hover Craft (Anthony Thomas).
