KINGSTON, Jamaica – An interesting sprint contest is brewing in Saturday’s (May 7, 2022) Overnight Allowance at six furlongs.
Ten starters are going to post, with The QUICK GALLOPER immediately by-passing Helicopter, Den Street, and Three Times Lucky from any consideration.
The QUICK GALLOPER’S middle rung of possible winners is comprised of Miniature Man, Ras Emanuel, Rojorn Di Pilot and One Don, leaving Billy Whizz, Mahogany, and God of Love as the principals.
Miniature Man, the winner of the one-mile Classic, the 2000 Guineas in 2021, is returning from an injury break of 308 days. There is no doubt that Miniature Man has the class but he is going to need the run to find himself, and in addition, six furlongs is a tad short for him.
Oldster Ras Emanuel has the back class to play a role in this Overnight event, but against younger and juicier opponents, he will be found wanting.
One Don with visiting jock Allen ‘Bongo John’ Maragh on board, has already demonstrated that he can handle the heat in this grade. On April 18, One Don finished 5 ½ lengths behind Runaway Algo and Mahogany at 5 ½ furlongs. The extra half-furlong will suit One Don, and if the pace comes back in the straight, he will be on point to strike.
Rojorn Di Pilot has waned in recent times but if he finds his true self can provide some fireworks.
Billy Whizz made a strong seasonal entry on April 3, to show that he was in good nick. He is drawn at one and has to get out of starting stall quickly to avoid being bogged down in the middle race hustling. Billy Whizz possesses adequate speed to race with the pacesetters and is strong enough to hold his gallop when in the lane for the final blitz.
God of Love is stepping down to the Overnight grade and as such carries the top weight. The trip of six furlongs is perfect for God of Love, who can easily stay behind the leader(s) and strike when necessary.
Mahogany, has the ability, has the run at this level in his hoofs, has a trip he likes, and has been catching pigeons at exercise in the mornings. All the stars are aligned for a Mahogany victory.
