Mahogany, the Ian Parsard-trained five-year-old gelding, confirmed his status as the top-rated horse in training with an impressive win in the inaugural staging of the $1.25-million Clovis Metcalfe Cup on Saturday, July 2, 2022.
Bred by Sensational Slam out of the traditional mare Mete-Orite, Mahogany slammed rivals by 10 ½ lengths at 7 ½ furlongs (1,500m), completing the distance in 1:30.2, which is shades outside of the track record of 1:29.2 done by SkyTrain on May 7, 1983.
Ridden by leading jockey Dane Dawkins, Mahogany wasted no time in showing his rivals a clean pair of heels when he trotted to the lead, passing the intersection at the seven furlongs (1,400m) pole. Further and Beyond, ridden by Tevin Foster, tracked from second place ahead of Money Monster (Reyan Lewis) and Billy Whizz, the mount of Romario Spencer.
Bouncing along sweetly down the backstretch, Dawkins took Mahogany back a bit and allowed Billy Whizz to take up the running, leaving the six furlong (1,200m) as I’ve Got Magic (Javaniel Patterson) made a run to third place.
It took no time for Mahogany to take back control of the race as the far-striding runner regained the lead approaching the half-mile and then began to open up on the field.
Cruising when entering the lane, Dawkins reminded Mahogany that the race was not yet over with a couple of changes of holds and cracks from the left-hand whip.
Mahogany then went on to register his second consecutive win from three starts in the three-year-old and upwards Open Allowance event. Calculus (Shane Ellis) finished second and Further and Beyond third.
