KINGSTON, Jamaica - Thirteen runners will compete in the 7½-furlong (1,500m) The Kingston feature, confined to native-bred three-year-old colts and geldings, at Caymanas Park on Sunday, May 8, 2022.
Below is the analysis of the runners in this $3-million event.
1 – SHADOWFAX is a bay colt (May 5) by Legal Process out of Aretha, trained by Lawrence Freemantle with Robert Halledeen in the saddle. A seasoned campaigner, Shadowfax is always around in his races. The Kingston is beyond his reach.
2 - THE CITADEL is a chestnut gelding (May 20) by Key To Power out of Wings of Hope, trained by Ian Parsard with Dane Dawkins in the saddle. Unbeaten in two starts to date, The Citadel last raced on March 19 over 7 ½ furlongs, defeating rivals by 7 ¾ lengths in a time of 1:35.1. He should report for this engagement an even better animal and given that he is working well, The Citadel will be a deciding factor when the winning post arrives.
3 –TEKAPUNT is a bay gelding (February 25) by Northern Giant out of Just A Flutter trained by Jason DaCosta) – Won the Sir Howard Stakes (six furlongs) and then finished third behind Emperorofthecats and Blue Vinyl in the Prince Consort Stakes (seven furlongs). With a hot headline expected, Tekapunt has the ability to stay off the pace, and then produce his characteristic late surge in the stretch drive. The faster the pace, the better it will be for Tekapunt.
4 - SALUTE THE DEPUTY is a bay gelding (April 20) by Deputy Glitters out of No Pain No Gain, trained by Michael Marlowe with Christopher Mamdeen - Finished down the track in the Simply Magic Cup won by Power on April 17 at a mile. A winning run from Salute The Deputy is highly unlikely. Note, Salute The Deputy races with the figure 8 on.
5 - BLUE VINYL is a chestnut colt (March 18) by Bern Identity out of Blufield, trained by Patrick Lynch with Raddesh Roman in the saddle. Finished third behind Luksol and Nomoredeals on April 23, when he was expected to win, especially after his second-place effort in The Prince Consort. The extended trip of The Kingston suits Blue Vinyl, who will give his best in the final two furlongs. Note, Blue Vinyl races with the blinkers off.
6 - KP CHOICE is a bay colt (March 10) by Nasheet out of Drop Them, trained by Phillip Lee with Andre Powell in the saddle. – Shed the maiden tag in convincing fashion 15 days ago, and now faces the best of his cohort. Winning for KP Choice is going to be difficult.
7 - SUPREME SONG is a chestnut colt (February 18) by Sensational Slam out of Red Gold) – Got off the mark on his second attempt over six furlongs on April 9. Though winning by just a neck over Get A Pepsi in a time of 1:15.1, Supreme Song is of Classic potential and should not be left out of final calculations.
8 - DEEZI is a bay colt (February 14) by Northern Giant out of Buyabook, trained by Jason DaCosta with Anthony Thomas – Scratched from the Prince Consort Stakes on April 3. Prior to that, Deezi was a length and a quarter behind talented foreigner Runaway Algo over 6 ½ furlongs (1,300m). Deezi, based on that effort, could fight this out successfully, plus he has the ability to stay close to the leaders, with enough left for a strong final effort in the straight. Note, Deezi races with the figure 8 on.
9 – NOMOREDEALS is a chestnut colt (April 18) by Soul Warrior out of Thornhill Miss, trained by Gresford Smith with Paul Francis in the saddle. Nomoredeals finished second behind the American-bred Luksol over six furlongs on April 23. He will enjoy the extension in the trip and is poised to make a significant mark. Do not rule out Nomoredeals.
10 – EMPEROROFTHECATS is a bay colt (March 1) by Emperor Hall – Laws of the Cat trained by Carl Anderson with Andre Martin in the saddle – Has won two races from as many starts. Emperorofthecats won the Prince Consort Stakes over seven furlongs, making him the leader of the male three-year-olds going into this event. Emperorofthecats is a dogged sort who likes to run from in front but he can be settled close enough to the leaders and then make his move. This Carl Anderson trainee has been going well at exercise in the mornings and will be hard to deny. It is of note that Emperorofthecat’s regular rider Bebeto Harvey has been replaced by Andre Martin. Note, Emperorofthecats races with the tongue tie on.
11 - PERFECT BREW is a bay gelding (May 10) by Bern Identity out of Moonlight Brew trained by Richard Azan with Dick Cardenas in the saddle – Came home a length and a half in second place behind Madelyn’s Sunshine over five furlongs round on April 9. Perfect Brew is going to welcome this extended trip but will have to show marked improvement to defeat his colleagues. Much has been expected of Perfect Brew since his two-year-old days, but he has not fully delivered, maybe delivery will come on Sunday.
12 – POWER is a chestnut colt (February 16) by Bal A Bali out of Swift Fox, trained by Philip Feanny with Omar Walker in the saddle – Showed his hoofs with an eye-catching performance to win the Simply Magic Cup over a mile on April 17. Then Power won by 3 ¾ lengths in a time of 1:40.3, and effort which brought him to the top of the pile among the three-year-old colts and geldings. Power has been primed at exercise and will be difficult to beat.
13 – BRINKS is a bay gelding (February 19) by Bern Identity out of Indian Bluff) – Has not lived up to early expectations. Brinks was 27 lengths behind the winner of the Prince Consort Stakes, but he is the top male of the 2021 batch of two-year-olds, and thus, cannot be totally left out.
