KINGSTON, Jamaica - Trainer Robert Pearson's two-year-old filly, Mighty Gully, made an auspicious start in her debut race at Caymanas Park on Saturday (October 26), leaving her connections excited about her future potential.
Racing in a maiden two-year-old call over 4 ½ furlongs with Abigail Able in the saddle, Mighty Gully, a bay filly sired by Buzz Nightmare out of Lady Exotic, overcame some early immaturity to showcase her raw speed and capture victory in her first outing.
Despite displaying some greenness by "prancing across the track," Mighty Gully's natural talent shone through. She crossed the finish line a length ahead of colt Ideal Winna (Tevin Foster) with Hazelnut (Dane Dawkins) rounding out the top three.
More importantly, Mighty Gully's winning time of 53.1 seconds established a new track record for the distance.
Trainer Pearson expressed his satisfaction with the filly's performance. "This filly (Mighty Gully) gives the early impression that she is a sprinter in the making," he shared with Quickgallopja.com. "Based on what I saw in the mornings, this race on Saturday, I thought this first run would be decided by my filly and Ideal Winna, and so it turned out."
He continued, "I am pleased with her (Mighty Gully) first effort. She has good early speed, and she used it effectively."
While Pearson acknowledged Mighty Gully's promising debut, he remained cautious about making any definitive pronouncements on her future schedule. "So far, so good, but speaking to you the day after the race, it is too early to make a full assessment of how she came out of the race," he explained.
As for when Mighty Gully might return to the track, Pearson indicated a wait-and-see approach. "She has to get time to develop and may race one more time before the end of the year. We will see what happens," he concluded.
