KINGSTON, Jamaica – In a stunning reversal that has sent shockwaves through the local racing community, the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC) has overturned the stewards' controversial decision to demote Tekapunt from first to third in the second race on October 21, 2024.

The JRC's decision, which came after a heated appeal from Tekapunt's connections, marks a significant victory for the horse's owners and a major blow to the credibility of the stewards' initial ruling. The original decision had sparked widespread outrage and unrest among punters, leading to the abandonment of the remaining races on the day.

In a detailed statement, JRC Chairman Clovis Metcalfe outlined the key factors that led the board to reverse the controversial ruling. He emphasized that the stewards' original decision was based on insufficient evidence and a rushed judgment, highlighting the lack of any objections from the jockeys involved, the absence of post-race questioning, and the clear evidence of mutual interference between Raddesh Roman and Samantha Fletcher, as well as Walker's infringements.

"The board noted that Roman and Fletcher were engaged in a 'sword fight' down the stretch, with each hitting the other's horse, and Walker's infringements. The board is recommending that all three jockeys be summoned for questioning," Metcalfe said.

The JRC's decision to reinstate Tekapunt as the rightful winner of the race has ignited a fierce debate within the racing community. Some have praised the board for their thorough review and for upholding the principles of fair play. Others have questioned the stewards' competence and called for a complete overhaul of the appeals process.

Regardless of one's perspective, the JRC's decision has undoubtedly shaken the foundations of local racing. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of integrity and transparency in the sport, and a warning to stewards that their rulings will be held to the highest standards.
