KINGSTON, Jamaica - In the vibrant racing culture of Jamaica, it's a time-honoured tradition for fans to bestow colourful monikers upon their favourite jockeys. This practice has become an integral part of the sport's folklore, adding to its charm and personality.
Over the years, racing enthusiasts have fondly remembered jockeys like Emilio "Bimbo" Rodriquez, Winston "Fanna" Griffiths, Hubert "Chinna" Bartley, Charles "Bogleman" Hussey, Andrew "Cartoon" Ramgeet, Wesley "Callaloo" Henry, Dick "Wily Coyote" Cardenas, Jose "Juicy" Bravo, and many others too numerous to count.
In the present day, we have a new crop of jockeys with equally catchy nicknames, including Tevin "Terrific" Foster, Reyan "Action Pack" Lewis, and Raddesh "Sneaky Fox" Roman. The latest moniker making waves at The Park is "Wild", which has been bestowed upon visiting Panamanian jockey Victor Sanchez.
Victor "Wild" Sanchez has quickly captured the attention of racing fans with his fearless attitude and robust riding style. Over the course of last weekend's two-day racing event, Sanchez rode three winners: Principal Tiffany for trainer David Powell, Don Pablo for Al Brown, and T Brady for Michael Spencer.
Sanchez's aggressive riding style has already put him in heated battles with current co-leader Raddesh Roman. Two of his three victories last weekend came down to the wire, with T Brady and Principal Tiffany winning by a neck and a nose respectively.
Sanchez's tenacious riding style has not gone unnoticed by trainers, with his mounts coming from multiple stables – a clear indication of his growing reputation. Fans and observers alike agree that while he may be new to the Jamaican racing scene, Sanchez is a skilled, strong and determined rider who always gives it his all.
Since arriving in Jamaica, Sanchez has wasted no time making his presence known, riding seven winners from approximately 38 starts.
As the season progresses, fans will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on the "Wild" one from Panama.
