KINGSTON, Jamaica - Jockey Paul ‘Country’ Francis’ return from injury on Saturday, August 17, 2024, proved to be a successful one.
The man, who has over 800 winners under his belt, was on rides on the day, O So Smart in the eighth for trainer Steven Todd, and Fearless Soul in the tenth, trained by Philip Feanny.
Francis finished third on O So Smart, then in typical ‘Country Style’ won atop Fearless Soul in an Overnight Allowance call for three-year-old and upwards horses going six furlongs.
Giving an update on his return success, Francis told this website that recuperating took a while but he was cautious.
“I fell from Power of Faith, bracing the fall with my left hand.
“When my hand hit the ground, I could immediately feel the pain. Thankfully after doing the necessary tests, my hand, meaning the wrist and the palm, nothing was broken. However, there was damage to the ligaments, which required treatment.
“After receiving that treatment, the hand got better and I started to exercise horses again. Still, I waited until I got the go-ahead to ride on race day," Francis shared with this website.
Commenting on his win with Fearless Soul, Francis said: “All I had to be was patient. So, I watched the pacesetters, sitting back just waiting for the right time to pounce. That happened after leaving the three. In the straight, I had to weave my way through, and Fearless Soul responded by leaving rivals behind. Thanks to the trainer and owner for this winning ride.”
