KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jockey Dick Cardenas brought out Sir Kel trained by O’Neil Markland to notch his first win since returning from a four-month break due to an injury. That was in the Caymanas Saturday (April 16) third.
Sir Kel and Cardenas were successful in a three-year-old and upwards claiming ($750,000 - $600,000) contest at five furlongs straight. This was the first win for Sir Kel in a year, and the first for Cardenas who made his return to the saddle last week (April 9).
Cardenas took Sir Kel out of his starting stall in good order and started to drift immediately from the four draw to the outside rails.
Entering the main track, four horses including Sir Kel formed a line, and that is when Cardenas asked his mount to increase the tempo which he did to win by by 2 ½ lengths. Custer (Trevor Simpson) was second and Sudden Flight (Paul Francis) third.
