JAMAICA RACING: Farrier Craig Thompson Tells His Story

HOOFS - 3

KINGSTON, Jamaica - A farrier is a specialist in equine hoof care, including the trimming and balancing of horses' hooves and the placing of shoes on their hooves.

A farrier combines some blacksmith's skills (fabricating, adapting, and adjusting metal shoes) with some veterinarian's skills (knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the lower limb) to care for horses' feet.

The often forgotten craftsmen in the racing industry play a crucial role in getting the best out of horses by ensuring they are properly shod and ready for both exercise and to race competitively.

QuickGallop.com and its You Tube Channel, The Quick Galloper spoke with Craig Thompson, president of the local Farriers’ Association.
