KINGSTON, Jamaica – A sparkling ride from champion jockey Anthony Thomas aboard It’s A Boy in the nine-race (Saturday, May 21, 2021) closed a productive day for the reinsman and conditioner Jason DaCosta.
Thomas had earlier in the day piloted Royal Vibes to victory for trainer Victor Williams and Madelyn’s Sunshine, the first of DaCosta’s two winners.
The delivery by Thomas on It’s A Boy in the four-year-old and upwards (non-winners of three) call at a mile was particularly pleasing. Thomas had It’s A Boy in the middle of the pack well behind the leader and stablemate Sir John (Omar Walker) with Mine That Cat (Youville Pinnock) following.
Rounding the bend, Thomas brought It’s A Boy closer to enter the lane in fourth place – three off the inside rails, as Sir John and Mine That Cat were locked in mortal combat. Thomas then made the crucial decision of steering It’s A Boy to the rails, which is when he started to motor.
Mine That Cat pushed his head in front of Sir John, and as soon as that happened It’s A Boy was in overdrive mode flashing by Mine That Cat to win in style by 3 ½ lengths. The rejuvenated Sir John dug deep into his reserves to get by Mine That Cat, and in so doing secured a one-two finish for DaCosta.
The official statistics now have Thomas after his Saturday triple, leading Dawkins by one win. Dawkins did not mount up on the day.
DaCosta with his two wins increased his lead to over $5 million in the trainers’ championship race. Nearest rivals to DaCosta, Gary Subratie, and champion Anthony Nunes were both winless on the day.
