KINGSTON, Jamaica – The upset had to happen and it came in the Caymanas sixth in the form of It Is Now who won at imposing odds of 18-1.
With the returning Dick Cardenas in the saddle, It Is Now trained by Michael Marlowe stalked the early leader Nina Dorada (Javaniel Patterson) when the gates opened.
Nearing the turn to enter the final two furlongs, Cardenas requested an effort from It Is Now who responded in quick order by putting on several lengths and after that went home without a glitch or even a challenge.
Toughness at 6-1 with Dane Nelson recovered from a rough trip to earn second place for an Exacta payout of $3,835. Qurandero (Tevin Foster) finished third.
It was the second winner on the day for Cardenas and it was the first for It Is Now from 16 starts.
This race was started very late as jockey Hakeem Pottinger down to ride Lady Bastipur was injured the starting stall.
