World Surprise, who had bolted before his debut on December 17 and was declared a late non-starter, made a triumphant return on Saturday, December 23, 2023, comfortably defeating his competitors.
With the race favourite Sheriff in Town refusing to start, World Surprise seized the opportunity and easily won the maiden special weight contest for native-bred two-year-olds at five furlongs straight by 9 ¾ lengths.
Trained by Anthony Nunes and ridden by Tevin Foster, World Surprise finished in a time of 1:00.2 (23.2 x 46.0).
"He [World Surprise] ran well. His time of one minute and two-fifths of a second is quite impressive for a two-year-old's first race," Nunes said. He said: "Unfortunately, the favourite didn't cooperate, but he can only beat those he raced against. I'm pleased with his performance."
World Surprise now qualifies for non-winners of two races and will participate in upcoming events in January or February of next year.
In the recently concluded race, World Surprise took an early lead and held it throughout, sprinting clear in the final furlong for an effortless victory. First Offence secured second place while Buzz Marie came in third.
