KINGSTON, Jamaica – After the completion of the first half of the 2023 racing year, jockey Reyan Lewis has been the dominant force in the saddle with 57 wins to his credit.
Lewis, who rode his third Classic winner in the St Leger, rides mainly for the barn of leading trainer Jason DaCosta.
The leading rider thus far has mounted up 211 times, with a win ratio of 27 %, while his top three placing percentage is 63.
Lewis at this time is 16 wins ahead of second place and defending champion Dane Dawkins. Dawkins has ridden 41 winners, with a win percentage of 19, and a top three placing percentage of 53.
Third, 17 wins behind Lewis is Tevin Foster. Foster started the year with a bang and was the early pacesetter in the championship but has dropped off significantly allowing both Dawkins and Lewis to seize the initiative. Foster has been successful 40 times with a win percentage of 18, and a top three placing percentage of 18.
The fourth slot is occupied by former three-time champion Anthony Thomas with 35 wins, that is, 22 wins behind Lewis.
The big question circulating at this time is whether or not any of his rivals can catch and defeat Lewis for the title?
Lewis is currently on a wave of success. Being part of the on fire DaCosta has aided in his desire of winning a first championship. DaCosta is churning out the winners, with Lewis riding most of those winners.
Yes, even with the DaCosta connection, Lewis is still able to garner support from other trainers.
Dawkins is not attached to any one stable. He rides for many including, the strong barns of Patrick Lynch, Richard Azan, Gary Subratie, and Ian Parsard, among others. He has a lot of work to do to retain his crown.
Foster is a member of the Anthony Nunes stables. Recently there has been a lull in the winners produced by that outfit, which has had the effect curtailing the number of winners for Foster.
Thomas can accurately be termed as a freelancer. He does not ride for any specific trainer, choosing instead to ply his trade among many.
To answer the question of whether or not Lewis can be caught with such a sizeable advantage at this time, the answer is yes.
The world we live in cyclic in nature, therefore, he could go through a slump, he could be suspended, the variants are many. Yet, given his present lead of 16, it is going to be difficult for the rest of the pack.
Let us wait and see!
