KINGSTON, Jamaica - Miss Moneypenny, a chestnut filly trained by champion trainer Jason DaCosta, made a stellar debut in the $1.1-million Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC)/Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) Juvenile Dash, kicking off the 2024 two-year-old series on Thursday, August 1.
Despite facing only three opponents after stablemate Lovisa’s was scratched, Miss Moneypenny dominated the maiden special weight contest for native-bred two-year-olds, winning by an impressive 5 ½ lengths over three furlongs (600m) in a swift time of 34.4 (22.2).
DaCosta expressed his delight with her performance, citing her speed and potential for further growth.
“It was a good win by Miss Moneypenny. It is the start of the juvenile season and it is always a happy feeling winning the first two-year-old.
“You will remember that I won this same race last year with Banadura, and she went on two win the Oaks after reaping success in two of the major three-year-old Classic prep races.
“Miss Moneypenny has talent as she demonstrated in this race. We will be guarding her carefully, and monitor her progress.
“It was unfortunate that Lovisa was a late non-starter. She will be back,” DaCosta said in his post-race interview.
With her impressive debut, Miss Moneypenny sets the stage for a promising run in the Millionaire Series of races.
