KINGSTON, Jamaica – Although only five of the top horses in training are entered in the seven-furlong Eros Trophy, a blazing contest is expected.

The Quick Galloper’s analysis of the possible outcome of this Grade One call is published below.

1 – RUNAWAY ALGO seeks his fourth win in 2023. This foreigner prefers to race on the lead, which is going to be a hard task among these on Saturday. Runaway Algo has shown a more pleasing tendency to dig deep in his races this season and will be quite comfortable going seven furlongs. Although receiving weight from both Mahogany and I Am Fred before, Runaway Algo did not win. The same is expected in this one.

2 – KING ARTHUR continues to deliver at age six. He enters this trophy event with the light impost of 101 lb. It is likely that this former Derby winner will act as a pacesetter for his stablemate.

3 – I AM FRED is seeking his fifth entry into the winners’ enclosure from five starts in 2023. I Am Fred is a versatile campaigner, who can lead, stay with the leaders, or come from behind. The Jason DaCosta trainee has already beaten Mahogany this season (one mile) by close to four lengths, receiving 11 lb. On Saturday, I Am Fred and Mahogany are only one lb apart, with the trip likable to both.

4 – MAHOGANY makes his third appearance this season. The fact that Mahogany is allowing weight albeit one lb to I Am Fred is an indication that he is still regarded as the top handicapper currently racing. For Mahogany to win the Eros, a lot will depend on the riding tactics of his jockey, Dane Dawkins. There is no doubt that Mahogany has speed, but if the jockey decides to press on the headlines, he is going to fall prey to I Am Fred. Mahogany must be rated close to the leader, then make his move with about 2 ½ furlongs to go in the contest.

5 – Eagle One can safely be regarded as a filler.
