KINGSTON, Jamaica – Following two wins by two well-backed horses in the first two races, it was time for the upsetter to arrive.
That upset winner came in the Jamaica Day third in the form of 59-1 chance Colawill. Colawill’s success was achieved in a four-year-old and upwards (non-winners of two) call going seven furlongs.
Trained by Marlon Anderson with lightweight apprentice Ramon Nepare aboard, Colawill raced on the rails behind the leading quartet. The lead changed around as Vice Cherry Pie (Omar Walker), Daytona Belle (Oshane Nugent) and Nina Dorado (Paul Francis) challenged each other.
Vice Cherry Pie won that battle to enter the straight as the leader. Nepare saved ground on the inside but had to switch to the outside and was able to get up in time for the upset victory.
Vice Cherry Pie at 74-1 finished second making for a juicy exacta of $83,715. Third went to Daytona Belle.
Of note is that the trifecta, the superfecta and the Hi-5, all had carryovers.
