Following the 3-year-olds on champions’ day
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The race day of Saturday, February 26, 2022, has been designated as Champions’ Day at Caymanas Park.
It is the time when the champions in all the various categories will be presented with their trophies, with all races on the day named after the champions.
As THE QUICK GALLOPER continues to monitor the development of the three-year-olds, attention is focussed on the third race slotted on the card – named after Horse of the Year Further and Beyond, for maidens and untried horses going a mile.
There are seven runners set to enter the starting gates. The following is THE QUICK GALLOPER’S analysis of these seven horses in the order of the draw.
1 – KING RIC (three-year-old bay colt by Greenpoint Crusader out of Little Jennie) – This colt has raced once without stirring the egrets. His learning curve continues on Saturday.
2 – SCOOBY (three-year-old bay colt by Casual Trick out of Royal Dutch) – Scooby has raced two times, finishing second behind Roraima on debut at a mile, and then third behind Berning Red and Rum Puncher going seven furlongs. It was noted that Scooby in his second outing drifted wide in the straight and was still able to finish 1 ½ lengths in third. Going a mile again, against a more moderate field, Scooby should meet his connections in the winners’ enclosure.
3 – SLAM (three-year-old bay gelding by Sensational Slam out of Bedroom Chatter) – Since finishing second on debut (December 12, 2021), Slam has not shown up in his other two races. Even with Shane Ellis in the saddle and with the visor taken off, Slam’s best hope is a minor placing.
4 – HOWILOOKIN (three-year-old bay colt by Western Classic out of Gold Charm) – Finished way behind when first at the races on February 6, and is going to need more time.
5 – ANOTHER WAVE (three-year-old bay filly by Savoy Stomp out of High Cube) – Has accumulated some amount of experience from his five races to date. Another Wave has finished second, two times, and third, also two times. He will be going a mile for the first occasion and this might be his undoing.
6 – THIRTYONEKISSES (three-year-old bay filly by Savoy Stomp – out of Shahar) – The most experienced of this lot with seven career starts. Thirtyonekisses finished a short head behind Scooby going a mile and any return to that form makes Thirtyonekisses a life chance for the exacta and trifecta wagers.
7 – DEVONTE (three-year-old grey colt by Fearless Vision – Eighteen Karat) – This is a well-bred colt who has not yet in two outings started to excite racing fans. Races on Saturday, with the tongue tie on.
