KINGSTON, Jamaica - Marlon Pusey has always had a love for horses, but it was words of encouragement from strangers that ignited his ambition to become a licensed thoroughbred horse trainer. Pusey found inspiration while working as a groom for trainer Gary Subratie in Trinidad and Tobago.

One day, Pusey encountered a group of Trinidadians who urged him to pursue a training position, as he exhibited all the qualities of a successful racehorse conditioner. "When I was in Trinidad and Tobago and demonstrated my passion and dedication, some local men told me that I am not just a groom, but have the potential to be an exceptional trainer," said Pusey.

Upon returning to Jamaica, Pusey obtained his assistant license under Subratie's guidance and followed his dream. He enrolled in the Jamaica Racing Commission Trainers' Training program and successfully graduated on May 12th this year.

On Sunday, September 10, 2023, Pusey celebrated his first career win with three-year-old chestnut colt Cookie Day N Night claimed victory in a native-bred three-year-old maiden race over 5 furlongs (1,000m) straight. Champion jockey Dane Dawkins led Cookie Day N Night to triumph by 10 lengths ahead of Crucial Alexxya (Oneil Mullings) and Oh My (Matthew Bennett), clocking in a time of 1:01.2.

"I've always given my best, so I knew success would come eventually. I'm grateful for everything and thankful for everyone who has supported me," said Pusey. "A special thank you goes to Mr. Subratie for all he has done for me. This win feels fantastic, and I'll continue striving for more victories."

Pusey reminisced about his lifelong passion for the sport, saying, "Ever since I was a young boy, I used to come to the track and fell in love with the sport. I never left. I began my career as a groom in 1995."
