KINGSTON, Jamaica - Four locals come up against four foreigners in a three-year-old (non-winners of two) for local-bred horses and a maiden for foreigners on Saturday next (April 9) at Caymanas Park. The distance is five furlongs round.
The four locals are Phoenix Risen, Bugatti, Nomoredeals, and Perfect Brew, while the foreigners are Wowza, Madelyn’s Sunshine (a first-timer), Gilbert, and Unruly Gal.
Of the locally bred horses, Bugatti can be taken out of serious contention, with Wowza, even racing with the tongue tie and figure 8 on is eliminated from the list of the importees.
Bugatti is consistent but races in non-two for the first time, and will have to wait.
Phoenix Risen has speed with his only win coming at this trip. This, however, is a more difficult set of rivals, but if left unmolested on the headline, will last home.
Nomoredeals was not disgraced in the Sir Howard, finished only 4 ¼ lengths behind the winner. Nomoredeals has been showing up at exercise and must not be ruled out.
Perfect Brew was one of the better two-year-olds of last year. In his first outing at three, Perfect Brew finished fifth in the Sir Howard in what was an uninspiring run. He needed that effort and has since been progressing at exercise in the mornings. On Saturday, Perfect Brew gets a drop in the weight of eight pounds and with his trainer taking off the figure eight, he has a better opportunity of setting things right.
Madelyn’s Sunshine has been advancing at exercise, putting herself in a position to play a role in the business end of this race.
Gilbert is a consistent runner who disappointed when finishing fifth by 13 lengths behind Outbidder over seven furlongs on February 26. Gilbert should run an improved race. Note the visor has been put on and Gilbert races with first-time Lasix.
Unruly Gal was the talk of the town on debut on March 2 over the straight course. Then Unruly Gal finished third by 7 ¼ lengths behind Power Ranking and Phoenix Risen. Unruly Gal should be better off for that effort and could lead home rivals. Note the tongue tie and figure 8 have been put on.
