Father Patrick gives defining performance in Caymanas Saturday nightcap – closes double for apprentice Oshane Nugent

KINGSTON, Jamaica – In a well-judged and well-timed display in the saddle, apprentice Oshane Nugent pulled all the correct strings to land the St Catherine Cup feature aboard the Ian Parsard trained Father Patrick in what was the Caymanas Saturday tenth.

With the race packed by known speedsters, Nugent kept Father Patrick in close touch behind expected leader Patriarch (Dane Nelson), who set thunderous splits of 22.2 x 45.3.

Nugent using the mid-race pace of Father Patrick moved his mount closer to Patriarch entering the final push of the stretch drive.

Father Patrick responded in quick order and soon blew by Patriarch, who by then had started to backtrack leaving the likes of Duke (Robert Halledeen) and Universal Boss (Omar Walker) to vie for the second and third slots respectively.

Interestingly, this was Father Patrick, who had surgery as a three-year-old, fifth victory from his last 11 starts. Father Patrick is now five-years-old.

Nugent, who now shares the lead, thus far in 2021, with co-champion Anthony Thomas (six wins each) was riding his second on the day, the same as Thomas.

The winning time was 1:12.0 on what was a slow track all day.
