Kingston, Jamaica – It’s a new year, the juvenile season is over, and now all eyes are on the three-year-olds as the quest for glory in the Classic races gets underway.
This grouping starts its Classic trek on Monday, January 2, 2023, when seven starters head to the gates to race over five furlongs round.
The Quick Galloper’s assessment is published below in draw order.
1 – DIGITAL LIGHT is a bay filly (January 14) by Wannabeaplayer out of Morning Grace trained by Gary Griffiths with Oshane Nugent aboard. Note, Digital Light races with the tongue tie on. This colt has already demonstrated that he is of some use when finishing second on debut. Digital Light, with the tongue tie off, is excepted to fight out this one.
2 – WHIZZ KIDD is a bay colt (April 19) by Northern Giant out of Mayken Joy trained by Jason DaCosta with Robert Halledeen aboard. Note, Whizz Kidd races with the cheekpieces on. Returns from a break of 44 days as the most experienced in the lot with seven starts to his credit. Should hit the board.
3 – MISS MAMAS is a bay filly (April 6) by Conquest Cherimash out of Cup O Tea trained by Steven Todd with Richard Byrd aboard. Still finding her way.
4 – VOLATILITY is a bay filly (March 10) by Hedge Fund out of Fashionista trained by Anthony Nunes with Tevin Foster aboard. Note, Volatility races with the visor off. Volatility has finished second in both of her two starts, beating Whizz Kid in the process. Has shown early speed in both of those outings, and with the opposition lighter than before, expect Volatility to go to the lead all the way to the winning post.
5 – EL AFORTUNADO is a bay colt (January 29) by Bern Identity out of Urgent Appeal trained by Norman Smith with Romario Spencer aboard. This first-timer will learn.
6 – CITY HAWK is a bay filly (February 26) by Midnight Hawk out of Magic City trained by Anthony Nunes with Andre Martin aboard. Note, City Hawk races with the tongue tie on. Was noticed when making her debut on December 11. She will find it difficult against her stablemate Volatility.
7 – SMOOTH AVIATOR is a bay colt (March 23) by Casual Trick out of Classic Aviator trained by Jason DaCosta with Reyan Lewis aboard. Has not shown much in his two efforts to date. The best on offer is a place on the board.
