KINGSTON, Jamaica - Trainer Gary Subratie said in an interview with Quickgallop.com that closing the racetrack by the promoter was made without any consideration for the welfare of the horses.

“I cannot understand why the decision was taken to close the track for exercise. I know it was directed more at the stakeholders, especially the trainers, because of the stalemate for a purse increase but at all times the care of horses must be taken into consideration. Simply put, it is a high-priority item.

“Horses are prime assets, and we as trainers, along with the grooms and others have to care of them, they can’t look after themselves.

“Exercise, in particular, is necessary for racehorses to maintain the physical and mental strength required for racing.

“It's our responsibility as their keepers to take care of the horses and provide for their needs, ensuring that they remain healthy, happy, and strong,” Subratie said.

The decision to close the race track for exercise came shortly after a standoff in negotiations regarding a purse increase involving the promoter and the stakeholders of racing on Tuesday morning.

However, a release from the promoter of local racing, Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL) issued late last night (Wednesday, July 12) announced the reopening of the racetrack at Caymanas Park this morning starting at 5:00 am.
