KINGSTON, Jamaica – The eighth race on Saturday (April 23) honoured the majestic Triple Crown winner of 1989, The Viceroy, trained for his entire career by 14-time champion trainer Philip Feanny.
This year's renewal of the one-mile Open Allowance | Graded Stakes event going a mile attracted six entries, with two of those six trained by Feanny.
It was no surprise that as soon as the gates opened one of the Feanny trainees I’ve Got Magic (Paul Francis) went to the front followed by King Arthur (Anthony Thomas) with Excessive Force (Jordan Barrett) moving quickly on the rails. Further and Beyond, the 3-5 on favourite and Calculus (Dane Dawkins) racing close by the leading trio.
I’ve Got Magic kept going in front with Excessive Force getting closer as they rounded the turn at the half-mile.
With three furlongs to go Halledeen was seen pushing as hard as ever to get Further and Beyond closer to the leader as was Dawkins on Calculus.
The Feanny pair of I’ve Got Magic and Excessive Force was still going strong in the lane, with the latter gathering strong momentum. With a furlong to go Excessive Force went ahead to win convincingly by 5 ½, with I’ve Got Magic second and Calculus third.
Excessive Force was the second winner on the day for Feanny.
