KINGSTON, Jamaica – The 2023 edition of the six-furlong Sir Howard Stakes for three-year-old colts and geldings (non-winners of two) was reduced to five runners, as after the six horses nominated to run reached the gates, Ridge Liner bolted, eventually taking no part.

The Quick Galloper’s assessment of the Sir Howard is provided below for readers on this website. This analysis is done based on the final placings.

FIRST: El Afortunado – the prohibitive 1-9 favourite duly obliged. Jockey Anthony Thomas riding for trainer Anthony Nunes was patient in the saddle as he stayed behind the leader before gathering momentum in the final two furlongs, pulling away to win by just over three lengths. El Afortunado gave the distinct impression that going longer will not be an issue, a good sign for the upcoming Prince Consort Stakes and the other major cohort races. He seems to be the best of the current crop of three-year-old colts and geldings coming from the Nunes barn. Must be followed closely.

SECOND: Big Guy In TheSky – showed a different side of himself by going to the lead. Galloped well before being pounced on in the final two furlongs by winner El Afortunado. Still, it was an encouraging effort by Big Guy In TheSky.

THIRD: Whizz Kidd – did not excite at anything during this contest. At this stage, Whizz Kidd is a moderate campaigner.

FOURTH: Kindred Spirit - was the only maiden in the Sir Howard, and it showed.

FIFTH: Curlin’s Noon – was never a winning factor throughout this one.
