KINGSTON, Jamaica – Accelerating from a late push in 2023 that landed him second in the championship, jockey Tevin Foster has charged into 2024 with impressive momentum.
Foster kicked off the year (January 1) with a triple win; Basilicus, trained by Michael Spencer; Volatility, conditioned by Anthony Nunes, and Eazy Peazy by Phillip Lee.
This opening triumph catapulted Foster to the top of the jockeys’ rankings, edging out Raddesh Roman by one, former champion Dane Dawkins by two, and reigning champion Reyan Lewis by three.
Foster solidified his lead with a double victory on Saturday, January 6; Chitu Prince and Milos. Roman and Dawkins each secured a single win (Allegiance and Cookie Night N Day respectively), while Lewis was absent from the day's races.
Foster currently holds five wins, leading Roman by two, Dawkins by three, and Lewis by four.
Foster's formidable start to 2024 has drawn attention, as has the conspicuous absence of champion Lewis.
The reasons for Lewis' non-participation remain uncertain, but it's notable that Foster (Jan 6) rode two horses trained by champion Jason DaCosta, an uncommon event.
This development is significant as Foster, in 2023, mainly rode winners from Nunes' stable. With Lewis out of the picture, Foster may have secured opportunities with the DaCosta team.
Interestingly, Nunes fielded three starters on January 6, none of which were ridden by Foster.
Intrigue abounds as the 2024 season unfolds.
