Rainsville - Oshane Nugent
Rainsville - Oshane Nugent

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The attention at the race track and beyond was pinpointed on the duel for the trainers’ championship involving champion Anthony Nunes and Jason DaCosta.

DaCosta extended his lead with three winners compared with Nunes’ single success.

THE QUICK GALLOPER has already posted an article on this pulsating contest including the latest statistics, and will now concentrate on the horses, who raced on the day.

 THE HORSES

1 – RAINSVILLE – TWO-YEAR-OLDS

Trainer Richard Azan continued his relentless push in the two-year-old ranks, by posting another winner, this time Rainsviille (Casual Trick – Fiftyshadesofgrey) going a mile, the longest the juveniles have raced this season. There was nothing spectacular about the win by this grey colt but, for sure, Azan is already plotting for next year with Rainsville.

On the issue of the 2021 juveniles, many pundits have observed that Nunes has so far won only one race for the youngsters, and that was way back with Golden Wattle. This lack of winners in this category by the champion conditioner has hampered his efforts in the trainers’ race, as with a barn consisting of a large number of two-year-olds, Nunes could always be relied on to produce several winners by this time of the year. There is still time for Nunes to win additional two-year-olds races but, for now, the lack of winners is noticeable.

2 - FATHER PATRICK

Father Patrick turned the tide on his recent conquerors with victory in the None Such Sprint. This win in the None Such was the 10th for Father Patrick from 27 career starts, with this success ranking as one of his best to date. The result of the None Such underlined the present power status of the Ian Parsard stables. Parsard finished first (Father Patrick), second (Rojorn Di Pilot), and fourth (She’s A Wonder). If you add to this fleet of high-end performers, Big Jule, Brinks, and Classical Orb, then one can better understand the talent on the Parsard shedrow.

The Parsard camp must be worried about the recent performances of the leading three-year-old filly, She’s A Wonder. This filly has developed the bad habit of being slowly out of the gates, and this, difficulty, was present in the None Such. Parsard and his team need to quickly solve this problem, for the filly to continue her wonderful career without a hitch.

3 - BILLY WHIZZ

What is revealing about this three-year-old, is that Billy Whizz has reached the Overnight Allowance Grade by winning his four condition races, but has career earnings of over $7 million. Indeed, this is a rare occurrence, as the winner’s purse for the four races leading up to Overnight Allowance is approximately $1.8 million. Billy Whizz topped up his stakes earnings by finishing second in two high-stakes races, namely, the Jamaica Derby and the Jamaica Cup. It has to be noted that when Billy Whizz (Nov 13) raced in the Jamaica Cup, he did so, at least two steps up the ladder, losing by less than a length.

4 – I AM FRED

This foreigner in his previous races developed the tendency of coming from behind late in the proceedings. On Saturday, probably, because of the number two draw, his rider, Phillip Parchment hustled I Am Fred to the lead, and that was the end for rivals. I Am Fred now has a career record of four wins from nine starts with earnings of over $2.3 million. Now I Am Fred has reached the Open Allowance, with the Ian Levy Cup later this month in his sight.
