KINGSTON, Jamaica – Racing for only the second time Desha was able to survive a stewards’ inquiry and jockeys’ objection to win the Caymanas Saturday (May 21) feature, the 7 ½ furlong-Awesome Power Trophy. The Awesome Power Trophy was for three-year-old fillies.
Desha ridden by Youville Pinnock for trainer Rowan Mathie raced in mid-pack watching closely as North London (Andre Martin) carried the gallop on the front end but was soon overtaken by She’s My Friend (Reyan Lewis).
It was She’s My Friend who took the field into the straight but by that time Desha had made up ground and started to challenge. Desha went by, then the greenness in her hoofs started to show, as she moved across shapely to her left causing Lewis to pull, She’s My Friend from off the rails losing momentum and several lengths in the process.
Desha then galloped strongly to win by 2 ¾ lengths over She’s My Friend, with Never On A Sunday (Phillip Parchment) running on to get third.
A stewards’ inquiry was immediately called followed by a jockey’s objection by Lewis, but the stewards ruled that the interference was insufficient to take down the colours of Desha.
