KINGSTON, Jamaica – The long-awaited entry into local racing of foreign-bred four-year-old chestnut filly, Desert of Malibu came in the ninth race on Sunday, September 24, 2023.
That event was a four-year-old and upwards maiden call for locally bred horses, and a non-two-for overseas horses at five furlongs straight.
The career history of Desert of Malibu is shared with readers on Quickgallop.com by her trainer Gary Subratie.
Subratie revealed that Desert of Malibu was originally conditioned in the US by Saffie Joseph Jr.
“Desert of Malibu developed health issues, resulting in her having to do surgery. This curtailed her development.
“The owner then decided to bring her to Jamaica to go to the breeding shed. Then the decision was taken to give her a punt on the track.
“I got her in the stables about four to five months ago, then took my time getting her prepared for this first outing. Deseret of Malibu demonstrated on Sunday that she does possess a lot of quality albeit against relatively safe rivals.
“As to where she will go from here, a lot will depend on how Desert of Malibu comes out of the race. We will have to watch her progress carefully, making sure she maintains her health,” Subratie shared with this website.
Exiting from the number two draw on Sunday with Raddesh Roman replacing Dane Dawkins in the saddle, Desert of Malibu raced easily for the first three furlongs while maintaining a presence on the front end.
On the main track, Desert of Malibu quickened impressively, winning by 9 ¾ lengths in a fast time for a first timer of 59.4 seconds, with splits of 23.2 x 46.2, without Roman not having to use his whip.
