Jockey Dane Nelson took the honours at Century Downs on Saturday (October 7) when he combined with favourite Itsallgoodman to win the feature CAN$100 000 CTHS Sales Stakes.
Going seven furlongs for the two-year-old Canadian-bred horses in race seven, Nelson made all the running to reach the wire by 4-¼ lengths ahead of rivals in a time of one minute, 24:29 seconds.
Fourteen-to-one bet Jump the Queue finished second while 15-1 choice BB’s Wildfire, ridden by Barbadian N’Rico Prescod, came in third.
Nelson is the current championship leader with 16 wins, with Prescod seven back in second and Barbadian Antonio Whitehall third on eight.
The 39-year-old Nelson, crowned champion at Century Mile in Edmonton last month, tasted his success in his first appearance on the 11-race card.
He broke Itsallgoodman smartly to quickly take command of the contest with fractions of 22:57 for the quarter and 46:19 for the half, with Jump the Queue, BB’s Wildfire and Jodeys Lil Pain all chasing.
Once in the stretch, Nelson kept on eye on his challengers while coasting to the wire with Itsallgoodman to win easily.
Prescod was also in winners’ row, pairing with 4-1 bet Smilin Evie to beat the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares by 1-½ lengths over 6-½ furlongs in race eight.
