KINGSTON, Jamaica – It was as if it was the Diamond Mile Race Day all over as jockey Dane Nelson continued his superb run of form when he guided home Azaria to victory in the first of nine races on the Saturday card at Caymanas Park.
Set for a 12:30 pm start, the he first race was 17 minutes late and after a lengthy wait for horses to get into the starting gates.
When the gates did open and the runners were off, well-fancied Lovely Day at 7-2 got a terrible start.
A number of horses were vying for the lead but after two furlongs in the Restricted Allowance event for four-year-olds and upwards coming down the five-straight course, it was recent winner Donald Trog who went into the lead which was short-lived as Nelson brought the Gary Griffiths trained Azaria with a strong run to win by 1 ¾ lengths at odds of 6-5. This was the eight winner for Griffiths during the season and the seventh for Nelson over three race days.
Second was Nuclear Thunder (Phillip Parchment – 14-1) and third Donald Trog (Chalrick Budhai – 5-1).
