KINGSTON, Jamaica - On Saturday, January 6, 2024, a seven-year-old dark horse named Chitu Prince won the fifth race. This victory was a big moment for Andre Adams, a new trainer who just got his licence.
Adams was one of 39 trainers who finished a special training programme by the Jamaica Racing Commission last May.
Chitu Prince raced in a special event for horses four years old and up. The race was a short one, just 5 furlongs.
Tevin Foster was the jockey riding Chitu Prince. They started fast, racing alongside two other horses, Absolute Blue and Chiney Music. But after a while, Chitu Prince pulled ahead and won by a big gap—10 lengths! The race time was just over a minute.
Adams was really happy about this win.
"The year started great," he said. "I have a small team, so I didn't expect to win so soon. But we did, and I'm so grateful. Now I'm excited for what's next."
He plans to get more horses and win more races. Adams has his sights set on the big competitions, but he knows it won't be quick or easy. "It's a long journey ahead," he said, "but we're ready to stick it out."
Then Andre talked about his life and how he fell in love with horse racing. He grew up near a racetrack and was always around the races. A local trainer encouraged him, and he learned from several experienced trainers before making it on his own.
