KINGSTON, Jamaica – Fourteen of the country’s top sprinters face Mr Starter in the annual staging of the Caribbean Sprint Championships (six furlongs) which this year takes place on Saturday, October 5 at Caymanas Park.
Saturday is the first of the two-day Superstakes carnival of racing sponsored by Lasco. The next day, Sunday, October 6 features the Superstakes itself and the Invitational Mile.
Below is the analysis of the 14 horses and their odds in this major event.
CHACE THE GREAT: (6-ch-g - Greatness – Our Miss Ruth) – The winner of this race for the last two years. This year, Chace The Great has raced six times and is yet to find the winning post in front including his last effort when he bolted and was declared a late non-starter. Yet, at no time can his chances be disregarded as he has the inborn ability to produce his best effort when the time is right. Maybe slightly hampered by the one draw but is going to hit the board. ODDS 8-1.
CAMPESINO: (9-b-g - Compadre – Yaella) – The old man in the lot who is going to be overwhelmed by the younger ones. ODDS 22-1.
LOTTERY TICKET: (6-b-m – Seeking The Glory – Just A Flutter) – Has been slowly coming into her own and will do her best over the last two furlongs. If the pace is scorching hot, Lottery Ticket can be in the top four but not as the winner. ODDS 80-1.
EXHILARATE: (4-ch-f – Blue Pepsi Lodge – Purejoy) – Has done reasonably well this season and is known as quite a speedster but lasting to the end with that speed going 6 furlongs especially against some seasoned rivals is going to prove difficult for this filly. ODDS 45-1.
MONEY MAGNET: (5-ch-m – Nuclear Wayne – Jazzy Jet) – Talented and consistent filly who has been primed for this race. Money Magnet has two victories this season and has the ability to be just off the pace before making her bid for the win in the straight. Money Magnet has a glorious chance of crowing off her career with a glorious big race victory. ODDS 12-1.
GOD OF LOVE: (3-b-g – Adore The Gold – Shanda D) – The only three-year-old in this event. God of Love skips a class to be present after a convincing win in Overnight Allowance going five furlongs round in a time of 59.3. God of Love is not going to be with the early leaders but has the uncanny ability to strike in the last furlong and a half in his races. At no time must God of Love be left out of the reckoning. ODDS 7-2.
RAS EMANUEL: (7-b-h – Burning Marque – Pleasant Princess) – Coming off a victory down the five straight in Overnight company but even that win will not enhance his chances in this one. ODDS 35-1.
ANOTHER VIGOROUS: (4-b-g – Legal Process – Miss Nickels) – Despite some setbacks in his career, Another Vigorous has steadily climbed through the ranks to be legitimately located in Grade One company. Another Vigorous goes over what may be considered his ideal distance (6 furlongs) and a statement of strong intent can be made. This is a talented horse who can prevail. ODDS 9-2.
BRUCE WAYNE: (5-b-g – Nuclear Wayne – Xpress Card) – Against these, Bruce Wayne will be lost. ODDS 90-1
ZEPHYR: (6-ch-m – Nasheet – Rushing Force) – Has steadily improved in recent times culminating in a victory over 5 ½ furlongs on August 1 when Zephyr took home the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission Trophy. Then Zephyr defeated Another Vigorous and Ras Emanuel and now faces probably her stiffest test to date but she has ability and with her coming from behind style of running can get there especially if the pace is hot. ODDS 25-1.
PEKING CRUZ: (4-ch-g – Traditional – Patty Girl) – Finally got the job done on September 25 in his last outing before this race. Peking Cruz is making his move at the right time and is going to have a say. ODDS 10-1.
K D FLYER: (5-dkb-h – Silent Valor – Dixie Flyer) – Has speed but has been put away quite easily over sprint distances by Peking Cruz, Another Vigorous and Exhilarate. No change is expected on Saturday. ODDS 60-1.
MR UNIVERSE: (5-ch-h – Region of Merit – Raging Fury) – The real speedball in this Sprint Championship but is known to lock off in the final part of his races. Mr Universe raced for the first time in 2019 on September 7 when he finished just under a length behind stablemate, Run Thatcher Run in 5 ½ furlong contest. Since then has been going well at exercise but he will have to put every hoof right if he is to become Sprint Champion. ODDS 9-5.
ANOTHER BULLET: (7-b-h – Nasheet – Wisely Noted) – Mr consistent himself as Another Bullet does not know how to run a bad race. Finished behind Run Thatcher Run and Mr Universe on last but now going half a furlong long and drawn well on the outside, Another Bullet will be close to the leaders before making his usual telling effort in the straight. ODDS 5-2. Note Another Bullet races with the Tongue Tie off.
