KINGSTON, Jamaica – The first major event for Grade One horses takes place on New Year's Day, Monday, January 1, 2024: the Ian Levy Cup.
Traditionally held at the end of December, the 8 ½ furlong race has been moved to January 1.
Unfortunately, only five horses are entered.
The Quick Galloper's assessment of these five entrants, in post-position order, is as follows:
1 – MAMMA MIA performed exceptionally well, finishing third by seven lengths behind Rough Entry in the Mouttet Mile and beating both Atomica and Perfect Brew. Setting a blistering pace, she held a sustained gallop when Rough Entry and Ability filled the first two slots. Mamma Mia has won at longer distances (10 furlongs) among her age group rivals. She can manage the Ian Levy distance but carries significantly more weight compared to Atomica and Perfect Brew. Nevertheless, Mamma Mia is a live contender.
2 – SISTREN TREASURE was victorious last time out (December 16) but faced inferior rivals. She will be running on.
3 – ATOMICA seemed out of sorts in the Mouttet Mile, supporting the long-standing view that she struggles in large fields among top racers. Competing against fewer contenders, Atomica should find this race more to her liking. With impressive preparation and no need to lead against speedball Mamma Mia, Atomica can easily track the leaders before making a move in the turn.
4 – IS THAT A FACT put in a commendable performance to finish fourth, 7 ½ lengths behind Rough Entry, Ability, and Mamma Mia in the December 2nd Mouttet Mile. If a fast pace is set by Mamma Mia and Atomica, Is That A Fact can stalk and wait before making his move in the stretch. Keep an eye on this one.
5 – PERFECT BREW emerged as one of the shining stars of the 2023 season. As a run-on sprinter, 8 ½ furlongs may be somewhat long for him. Nevertheless, with his usual racing style – staying off the pace and finishing strongly – Perfect Brew could still make an impact.
