KINGSTON, Jamaica – Hazelnut, a promising two-year-old chestnut filly, contributed to the recent resurgence of trainer Richard Azan by making a strong statement in her recent outing, (Sat, Nov 9, 2024) capturing the Betting, Gaming, and Lotteries Commission (BGLC)/Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) Jamboree Sprint.

After a slow start to the season when the winners were few, Azan has rebounded in the last quarter of the season with a number of victories, with Hazelnut being the latest.

Ridden by Dane Dawkins, Hazelnut was 4 ½ lengths ahead of the competition going 6 ½ furlongs, recording a final time of 1:14.3.

For trainer Azan, the win by Hazelnut, who was racing for the second occasion was accomplished by a better performance when the gates opened.

“I her first outing Hazelnut did not leave the gates well. Yet she rallied and was able to finish third. On Saturday, Hazelnut did much better and got the win as a result,” Azan said.

Hazelnut's strong start and well-timed surge down the stretch were key factors in her dominant win. Despite briefly relinquishing the lead to Strong Mind, Dawkins moved Hazelnut back to the front and secured the victory.

With such a promising start to her career, Hazelnut and her connections are optimistic about her future prospects.
