Six-year-old chestnut horse Bern Notice defied his high-claiming event background to win Division Two of the O&S Tack Room Trophy feature race on Saturday, August 31, 2024.
Trained by Ian Roberts and ridden by Shavon Townsend, Bern Notice produced a late kick to overhaul his rivals and claim victory in the Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward.
Despite going up in grade, Bern Notice won the one-mile (1,600m) event by a half-length. The Bern Identity out of Blufield progeny completed the race in an impressive 1:41.1 (23.4 x 46.3 x 1:13.2 x 1:27.2), showcasing his ability, while beating Oasis Jak (Shane Richardson) and Life Is Life (Carlos Blake).
“It was a very good win by Bern Notice,” Roberts said.
“I told him [Shavon Townsend] to get a good break, sit pretty close, get the horse into his strides, and from about the four furlongs out to start working him (Bern Notice) down and hopefully by the time you reach into the top of the lane you are close enough.
“The horse performed really well and won quite easily in the end. I was a little worried, as at the top of lane we weren’t even close to the leader, but he got rolling really well as his pace was better than the other horses in the straight.
“We will have to wait and see what’s out there with the conditions and pick our next races, but we don’t have a plan right now,” Robert said.
Bern Notice has now raced six times for the year, winning two races, [including Saturday’s victory], while finishing second on four occasions.
