KINGSTON, Jamaica - By no means can Jawara Steadman be considered one of the country's top trainee riders in the racing industry. Steadman, like many others, has struggled to secure riders and win races.

However, after four years of perseverance, he achieved his first professional victory on June 8 this year. Since then, Steadman has quietly and steadily established himself in the jockey's colony by winning five races in just over a month.

On July 22, 2023, Steadman displayed his improved skills and remarkable riding abilities aboard the Richard Azan-conditioned horse, Manoushe. His performance in the second event of the day captivated the crowd, leaving them cheering and applauding. Riding with patience, determination, and confidence, Steadman maneuvered Manoushe from behind the pack and surged ahead in the final stretch of a Maiden Condition Race for native-bred three-year-olds over a distance of 5½ furlongs.

During the race, Manoushe settled in fourth place as Grey Commander, ridden by Daniel Thompson, claimed the lead into the half-mile turn, followed by The Bees Knees with Bebeto Harvey in the saddle and Princess Akilah guided by Matthew Bennett. Steadman skillfully guided Manoushe through the pack, chasing down Grey Commander as both The Bees Knees and Newland Links, ridden by Reyan Lewis, also increased their pace.

In the last stretch, Grey Commander maintained the lead, but with a burst of energy, Steadman urged Manoushe forward, edging ahead at the crucial moment. Manoushe defeated Grey Commander by half a length, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:10.2 (24.2 x 48.1). The Bees Knees, a stablemate of Manoushe, finished in third place.

"It's a wonderful feeling. Winning races is always a great accomplishment, boosting my confidence and reminding me to continue working hard," Steadman said. "At times, it can be overwhelming, but staying focused and dedicated is crucial. I am grateful to the horse connections for giving me the opportunity to do my best every time," he added.
