KINGSTON, Jamaica – Champion trainer Anthony Nunes using mainly his string of three-year-olds (maidens, non-two, and non-three) has made significant gains on current leader Jason DaCosta in the trainers’ race during the last quarter (July 1 to September 30, 2022) of the racing season.
At the start of the quarter, Nunes occupied the third slot behind DaCosta, and Gary Subratie. The champion trainer lagged $223,620 behind Subratie, and $6,917,005 behind DaCosta.
In the same quarter, Nunes gained 28 first-place finishes, with his horses finishing 25 times in the second slot plus 25 third-place finishes.
During the third quarter, Nunes rallied his charges to cut the lead held by DaCosta to the more manageable amount of $3,638,265. In doing so, Nunes also went by Subratie, now leading the latter by all of $6,683,700.
In the win column (third quarter), Nunes visited the winners’ enclosure 23 times, with DaCosta having the same amount, and Subratie 10.
The main source of the gains made by Nunes on DaCosta came with the second and third finishes. Nunes in the third quarter had 28 second-place finishes and DaCosta 12. In the third-place bank, Nunes had 21, and DaCosta 13.
On the top 10 list, there were some minor changes. Trainer Steven Todd moved from eighth place to seventh, with trainer Ryan Darby also up one place from ninth to eighth.
Trainer Carl ‘The Cat Man’ Anderson enters the top ten list in tenth place, replacing Dennis Pryce.
